Borehole Commissioning – Lugbe & Kutunku Communities, 2023

In 2023, AID Initiative successfully drilled, equipped, and commissioned two solar-powered boreholes in orphanages and community settings in Lugbe and Kutunku. These boreholes replaced unreliable, contaminated water sources that previously caused frequent illnesses among children and residents.

The project included:

• Drilling and installation of deep boreholes with submersible pumps
• Solar power systems for sustainable, cost-free operation
• Overhead storage tanks and communal tap points
• Water quality testing and basic treatment/filtration setup
• Hygiene and maintenance training for local caretakers and community members
• Official handover ceremonies with community leaders, beneficiaries, and supporters

Key Achievements

• Provided safe, clean drinking water to over 600 children and families daily
• Reduced reported cases of waterborne illnesses (diarrhea, typhoid) in the months following commissioning
• Freed children (especially girls) from long walks to fetch water, allowing more time for school and play
• Created a model that has inspired follow-up requests from nearby communities

Lasting Impact These boreholes continue to serve hundreds of people daily with no electricity cost (thanks to solar). Regular monitoring shows sustained water quality and usage. The success of this project laid the groundwork for our ongoing “One Orphanage, One Borehole” expansion plans.
